Championship Game : Los Mochis, Sinaloa, MX 7, Placentia, CA 17

The slugfest championship game belongs to Placentia, CA as they hit their way past Los Mochis, Sinaloa, MX, by a score of 17-7.

Los Mochis batted through the lineup in the first inning, putting five runs on the board before Placentia even had a chance to respond. In the inning, RBIs were brought in on a Jose Armenta double, Eden Lopez Tapia single, passed ball, Angel Cuevas single, and Julio Rodriguez single.

Placentia didn’t let the explosive top half of the inning faze them as they put up eight runs of their own to take the lead. Their RBI were the product of a Jeremiah Peterson two run single, Evan Anguiano single, Vincent Moran single, Oliver Rojas single, and a few errors.

They tacked on seven more in the bottom of the third to increase their lead to 15-5. The runs came on a Cole Petler double, Finn Knapp single, Anguiano walk, Caden Petler two run single, and a couple of errors.

Los Mochis responded with two runs on a Juan Cabrera single and wild pitch that scored J Armenta. The runs were too little, too late however as Placentia scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth to reach the run rule. The runs were scored on a Rojas single and a Peterson single.

The best individual performance of Los Mochis came from Armenta who went 2-for-2 with an RBI.

Rojas of Placentia went 3-for-3 in the effort with an RBI. Peterson led the team in RBI with three.

Placentia finishes their tournament 5-0 and earns the title of 2022 Mustang-9 World Series Champion.

Day 3 Recap of the Mustang-9 World Series

Semi-final action of the Mustang-9 World Series kicked off in Modesto, CA as teams looked to punch their ticket to the championship game.

Semi #1 : Laredo, TX 11, Vacaville, CA 3

Laredo, TX used a strong first couple innings to power past Vacaville, CA, 11-3.

Laredo’s scoring started off in the first inning when they put up five runs. Three of the runs were scored thanks to the efforts of Leopoldo Fuentes III with an RBI single and Migel Elizondo Jr. with a two RBI double.

Vacaville responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the first on an error. They continued to chip away with a run in the bottom of the second on a fielder’s choice. Their third, and final, run scored in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a fielder’s choice.

Their efforts, however, were thwarted as Laredo’s pitchers shut down their scoring for the rest of the game. Raul Ortega Jr. started for Laredo, allowing two runs on one hit in one and two-thirds innings before he was replaced by Jerry Hennessey. Hennessey went two and one-third innings and allowed just one hit. He struck out two and allowed no runs. The final pitcher for Laredo, Trey Gonzales shut the door on the Vacaville offense, allowing one run on no hits.

Laredo had 12 total hits. Hennessey led the way with a 3-for-4 effort, including three runs scored. Fuentes III and Elizondo Jr. had three RBI each.

For Vacaville, their two hits came from Joseph Rico and Marco Saroyan. Jayven Pierce and Will Walther each had an RBI.

With the win, Laredo, TX will improve to 3-1 and advance to play Placentia, CA later on in the day during Semi #3.

The loss drops Vacaville, CA to 0-4 and eliminates them from title play.

Semi #2 : Bel Passi PONY 1, East Long Beach, CA 6

East Long Beach, CA defeated Bel Passi PONY by a margin of 6-1.

There was no scoring in the first or second inning for either team, but East Long Beach broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third when they put up two runs on a Jaedon Enyeart single, plating Liam Vaivao, and Emilio Aguirre groundout that plated Chase Baltazar. They extended their lead in the fourth when Vaivao singled and scored Jamil Barnett Jr..

Bel Passi responded in the top of the fifth on a Peyton Fromm single that allowed Aiden Winchester to score. East Long Beach responded right back when Aguirre singled and brought in another run.

Alexander Doan started on the mound for East Long Beach and went the full six innings allowing one run on only three hits. He walked one and struck out six.

The three hits for Bel Passi were picked up by Winchester, Fromm, and Carson Gil.

Twelve hits were picked up for East Long Beach, with the most impressive performance coming from Vaivao, who went 2-for-2 with two RBI.

East Long Beach, CA improves to 3-1 and will move on to play Los Mochis, Sinaloa, MX later in the day during Semi #4. 

The loss puts Bel Passi PONY’s final record at 0-4 as they are eliminated from the tournament.

Semi #3 : Placentia, CA 10, Laredo, TX 5

Placentia, CA won against Laredo, TX handedly in Semi-Final #3 by a score of 9-5.

Both teams struck in the first inning as Placentia put up two runs on a Jeremiah Peterson sacrifice fly and Tyler Darosa steal of home. Laredo’s Jerry Hennessey scored their one run on a throwing error.

Placentia extended their lead in the top of the third on two doubles by Jeremiah Peterson and Evan Anguiano. Anguiano’s double scored both Peterson and Darosa. They further extended it in the fourth when Oliver Rojas tripled and Peterson singled. This made the score a comfortable 7-1 in favor of Placentia.

The large lead wasn’t enjoyed for long as Laredo punched back in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs. The inning consisted of two RBI doubles by Alexandro Gonzalez and Leopoldo Fuentes III as well as a ground out that advanced Fuentes III home.

The immediate response by Placentia included three additional runs, one tacked on in the fifth  on a passed ball and two in the sixth on a steal of home and Caleb Nido single.

Placentia finished the game with 12 hits. Anguiano went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a double.

Out of the five hits Laredo had in the game, Alexandro Gonzalez had two of them, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.

The win puts Placentia, CA at 4-0 and in the championship game tomorrow at 6:00pm PST/US. They will face Los Mochis, Sinaloa, MX.

With their loss, Laredo, TX finished 3-2 and was eliminated.

Semi #4 : Los Mochis, Sinaloa, MX 7, East Long Beach, CA 4

Los Mochis, Sinaloa, MX earns their spot in the championship with a 7-4 semi-final win over East Long Beach, CA.

Los Mochis got the scoring started in the first with four runs. They scored on an Eden Lopez RBI single, Irving Fong two RBI double, and passed ball. They further extended their lead in the second on a fielder’s choice.

East Long Beach responded with two runs of their own in the third. The runs came via a Seth Witt single and fielder’s choice. They tacked on two more in the fourth and sixth with a walk and Jaedon Enyeart double.

Lopez had a good performance on the mound for Los Mochis, going five innings with four runs allowed on seven hits. He struck out three while walking two.

Witt finished with the best individual performance for East Long Beach with a 2-for-3 effort. He also added an RBI to that performance.

Lopez shined for the victorious Los Mochis with his bat as well as he had two hits in three at bats with an RBI. Fong and Angel Cuevas led the way with two RBI each.

Los Mochis, Sinaloa, MX’s win puts them at 3-1 and secures their spot in the championship game. They will face Placentia, CA at 6:00pm PST/US to see who takes home the trophy.

The loss ends East Long Beach’s tournament as they finish 3-2.

Day 2 Recap of the Mustang-9 World Series

Another day of pool play was completed as Day 2 of the Mustang-9 World Series concluded in Modesto, California.

Game 5 : East Long Beach, CA 9, Vacaville, CA 7

Two runs in the seventh helped propel East Long Beach, CA ahead of Vacaville, CA in extras, 9-7.

The first of those two runs came via a Jesse Marquez Jr. double and wild pitch.

Vacaville struck first in the bottom of the first inning when Joseph Rico doubled and later scored on an Elijah Galvan sacrifice fly. East Long Beach quickly responded, putting up two more runs in the top of the second to pull ahead, 3-2. The runs kept piling on for East Long Beach but Vacaville slowly chipped away. Midway through the fifth the score stood at 7-4 in favor of East Long Beach before Vacaville mounted a fifth and six inning comeback. Their tying run in the bottom of the sixth was scored when Liam Richerson stole home.

East Long Beach held on, however, en route to their 9-7 victory.

The high-scoring affair consisted of 21 total hits with 13 coming from East Long Beach and eight from Vacaville. Rico of Vacaville led the team in hits, going 3-for-4 while Chase Baltazar led East Long Beach in hits with his 4-for-4 effort.

With the win, East Long Beach, CA evens their record out to 1-1. They faced Bel Passi PONY later on in the day during Game 9. The loss put Vacaville, CA at 0-2. They played Laredo, TX later on in the day during Game 8.

Game 6 : Bel Passi PONY 7, Laredo, TX 9

Host Bel Passi PONY dropped a close one to Laredo, Texas by a score of 9-7.

Laredo was up 6-0 early in the game but surrendered six runs across three innings to Bel Passi who knotted the game at six in the top of the fourth. After not scoring since the second, Laredo took the lead back in the fourth inning on a groundout by Alexandro Gonzales, single by Migel Elizondo Jr. and wild pitch. Bel Passi took one back on a wild pitch in the top of the fifth, but it wasn’t enough as Laredo captured the win.

Several Bel Passi players had RBI that nearly allowed them to mount a comeback, but their efforts ultimately fell short. The players with RBI included Carson Gil, Kyle Martin, Peter Rodarakis, and Nicholas Martin Delgaizo.

Laredo had ten hits in the game with Jerry Hennessey, Elizondo Jr., and Gonzales all having multi-hit games.

The win makes Laredo, TX’s record sit at 1-1 while the loss puts Bel Passi at 0-2. Laredo faced Vacaville, CA later in the day during Game 8. Bel Passi faced off with East Long Beach in the nightcap of Day Two in Game 9.

Game 7 : Placentia, CA 5, Los Mochis, Sinaloa, MX 4

Game 7 featured a close contest between Placentia, CA and Los Mochis, Sinaloa, MX which ended in Placentia being victorious by a score of 5-4.

Placentia gained their lead in the third inning when they scored four of their five runs. Finn Knapp led the pack in hits, going 2-for-3.

Los Mochis, Sinaloa attempted to mount a comeback, but fell short despite great efforts from Eden Lopez with a triple, Irving Fong with a double, and an Angel Cuevas single all resulting in RBI.

Jeremiah Peterson toed the rubber for Placentia, going three innings and only allowing one run on five hits. He sat down two and walked none. Cuevas was the starter for Los Mochis, Sinaloa. He went four and two-thirds innings and allowed five runs on seven hits. He also struck out two.

Despite the loss, Los Mochis, Sinaloa collected ten hits. Juan Cabrera, Lopez, Fong, and Cuevas all had a multi-hit game.

Placentia, CA will improve to a perfect 3-0 in the tournament’s pool play. Los Mochis, Sinaloa, MX will drop to 2-1 in the pool play. Both can be seen in action tomorrow in the one game elimination style tournament. Placenta earns the bye as the #1 seed from their pool and will face the winner of Laredo, TX and Vacaville, CA at 1:30pm PST/US. Los Mochis, Sinaloa, MX also earns the #1 seed from their pool, earning a bye. They will square off against the winner of Bel Passi PONY and East Long Beach, CA at 4:00pm PST/US.

Game 8 : Laredo, TX 10, Vacaville, CA 0 (4 innings)

Laredo, TX blanked Vacaville, CA for the first shutout of the tournament, winning 10-0.

Damian Onofre was on the mound for Laredo, lasting all four innings while allowing five hits and no runs. He struck out six and walked none.

In the second inning, several Laredo players added RBIs to their statistics with Onofre, Raul Ortega Jr., Jerry Hennessey, and Alexandro Gonzales contributing. Hennessey ended the game going 3-for-3. The most impressive statistic for Laredo didn’t come with the bats, however, it came with their feet. They stole 18 bases in the game as five players stole more than one base. Onofre had five stolen bases.

Andrew Stanley led Vacaville in hits, going 2-for-2 in the game. He also tacked on three stolen bases.

The win puts Laredo, TX at 2-1 and Vacaville, CA at 0-3. Both will be in action against each other again in the one game elimination style tournament at 8:30am PST/US.

Game 9 : East Long Beach, CA 22, Bel Passi PONY 5 (4 innings)

 

East Long Beach capped off Day 2 with a blowout win over Bel Passi PONY, 22-5.

 

The game started off all in East Long Beach’s favor with their team scoring 10 runs in the first inning. Emilio Aguirre doubled twice in the inning.

 

As quick as East Long Beach scored a bundle of runs, Bel Passi responded with a bunch of their own. They tacked on five runs in the bottom of the second to make the game a more manageable, 11-5.

 

East Long Beach responded right back with 11 unanswered runs of their own. Aguirre and Jesse Marquez Jr. finished with four RBI each. Nearly every person in East Long Beach’s lineup had a hit as they tallied 19 total knocks.

 

Carson Gil finished 2-for-2 with three RBI for Bel Passi.

 

With the result, East Long Beach improves to 2-1 while Bel Passi falls to 0-3. These two will face each other again in the semifinals tomorrow at 4:00pm PST/US.

Day 1 Recap of the Mustang-9 World Series

The Mustang-9 World Series started play today in Modesto, California with four games taking place.

Game 1 : Los Mochis, Sinaloa, MX 10, Vacaville, CA 7

Runs were abundant in the game where Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico downed Vacaville, California 10-7.

Victorious Los Mochis, Sinaloa tallied 11 total hits in the game with multi-hit performances from Ulises Islas, Jose Armenta, Irving Fong, and Herlyn Serrano. Islas went 3-3 in the game.

Los Mochis, Sinaloa got the bats rolling in the top of the first inning when an error scored their first run. Vacaville, California wasted no time and responded with one of their own via an Elijah Galvan walk.

The lead seemed to break open for Los Mochis, Sinaloa when they scored four runs in the second to make it 6-1 on two RBI singles by Serrano and Fong as well as a pair of RBI doubles by Armenta and Eden Lopez. This lead, however, was cut to 6-3 when Vacaville scored in the bottom of the second on a Marco Saroyan single.

During the third inning, both teams scored two runs to make the score 8-5. Vacaville held Los Mochis, Sinaloa in the fourth while scoring one of their own on an Andrew Stanley single. 

This is the closest Vacaville would get as Los Mochis immediately responded with two more runs in the fifth. Vacaville tallied on one more one in the 5th to end both teams’ scoring at 10-7.

Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico improved to 1-0 with the win and moved on to face East Long Beach, California in Game 3 of the day. Vacaville, California fell to 1-0 and will have a chance to regroup against East Long Beach, California tomorrow during Game 5 at 9:30pm PST/US and against Laredo, TX in Game 8 at 5:00pm PST/US.

Game 2 : Placentia, CA 11, Laredo, TX 3

Placentia kept passing the bats and sitting down opponents en route to an 11-2 victory over Laredo, TX.

Runs came slow, but they came in a bunch of Placentia. Action kicked off in the first inning when Placentia’s Jeremiah Peterson singled and plated a run. In the fifth they put up three more runs on singles by Vincent Moran and Axton Bumgardner.

Bumgardner pitched three innings for Placentia, allowing no runs on one hit, striking out three in three innings of work. 

Ricardo Vasquez III went 2-2 for Laredo, TX. Bumgardner, Oliver Rojas and Peterson all had a multi-hit game for Placentia, each with two knocks.

With the win, Placentia, CA improved to 1-0 while Laredo, TX fell to 0-1. Placentia was in action again on day 1, facing Bel Passi PONY in game 4 of the day. Laredo, TX will look to pick up a couple of wins tomorrow when they face Bel Passi PONY at 12:00pm PST/US and Vacaville, CA at 5:00pm PST/US.

Game 3 : Los Mochis, Sinaloa, MX 14, East Long Beach, CA 13

Something was in the Modesto, California air today that caused this high scoring affair as Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico topped East Long Beach, California 14-13.

Los Mochis, Sinaloa had 17 hits while East Long Beach had 16. Multiple players on both teams had multi-hit games, contributing to the game’s incredibly high score.

Los Mochis, Sinaloa picked up where they left off in the last game, scoring quickly in the second inning on a Herlyn Serrano single.

East Long Beach had a monster fourth inning, putting up seven runs as Caden Reisch, Jaedon Enyeart, Emilio Aguirre, Chase Baltazar, and Jesse Marquez Jr. had an RBI.
